Ok, all that aside, this is a brilliantly produced western which has a great story to tell. What a load of garbage, I am surprised they dont ban every western because all the cowboys wear spurs which dig into the sides of the horse flesh. (A fellow reviewer reminded me of this Gem quite recently, glad he did, been a while since last viewing it)īonkers and sheer stupidity, bullets flying everywhere, a human being raped, (suggestive), torture, (visual) and killings/shootings, (visual), oh, also Lancaster and Co lighting up smokes all over the place, and all in glorious technicolour (excuse the pun), but lets chop out the horse tripping up scenes because it will offend all those animal lovers out there. Well worth a viewing or indeed a revisit. The tactics of 'Ulzana' make him a formidable opponent.Ī well made and convincing Western that includes many familiar faces among the cast list frequently seen in films of the genre The Lieutenant struggles to understand the ways of the Apache after seeing the results of their deeds will do well to listen to theĪdvice and thoughts of his experienced scout 'McIntosh' who knows that 'Ulzana's' violence can only be defeated by violence.Īt the end of the day it will come down to kill or be killed there will be no middle ground. However ahead of the pursuing troops 'Ulzana' is cutting a terrifying and brutal trail of killings in his wake targeting Homesteaders. 'Ulzana' and his Braves back to the Reservation. 'Garnett Debuin' accompanied by around 20 troops, Army Scout 'McIntosh' and 'Indian Scout 'Ke-Ni-Kay' to give chase and bring Lowell 'Captain Gates' orders that a patrol hunts down the renegade Apache, he assigns the young and inexperienced Lieutenant When Ulzana' and a small band of Braves including his Son break out of 'San Carlos Indian Reservation' the Commander of Fort Screen Legend 'Burt Lancaster' leads the cast-list in this gritty and well made 1972 Western which based upon factual events. Have come from another movie, and has no or little place in the film.Īll said and done, this DVD is for the hardcore Westerns fans andįans of 1970s movies, of which I am both.

They cut these scenes out, as this technique isn't used any more,īut they have. This makes someĪction scenes look bad, and slightly confusing. To animals, for their horse "trip-wiring" effects. Get better with age, but this copy is let down by bad editing, or

This movie seems to say "life is useless".īurt Lancaster gives another great performance. Western, as it goes against the grain of the Hollywood moviesĪt the time, although the early 1970s films were dark in tone Of hell, and has a dark nihilistic ending. This is a film that turns the South West of America into a vision They rape and kill, for no other reason, that they can. The Apache warriors are not noble savages, but just Vision of the old west, and somewhat uncomfortable at times to That being said, it is a dark and pessimistic And this film stands out among themĪll, as it is an allegory for the Vietnam war, and US involvement This is one of 3 revisionist Westerns Burt Lancaster madeĪbout the same time in the early 1970s. And now, because of the way movies are edited for TV, we can't see movies for adults at any time of the day or night - unless we buy the DVDs.

When TV first became digital I thought that finally we'd be able to see movies for adults at a reasonable time in the evening. Here there are realistic scenes of people being tortured and mutilated by the renegade Apaches, which would have been true to life, but would never be shown on TV. I've seen that with so many movies which I saw first in the cinema. But usually when that happens the cinema release version is shown the first time, generally in the early hours of the morning, and then it's censored for daytime showing, and no matter what time of day it's shown afterwards it will only ever be the cut version. I don't recall this ever being shown on TV, though it may have been. Did the guy ever make a bad movie? I've never seen him in one. Definitely one for the old westerns brigade.
